Could I. Poem by John Maloy Phillips

Could I.

'COULD'
Could I shed the tears to let you see, what your love means me?
Could I break my heart, to lose your love if we must part?
Could a frown upon my face, say the word you can't misplace?
Could a word say it all? To lose you dear then I would fall?
Could a thousand things I do, prove at all that I love you?
So some things stay the way they are, and neither can a wish
upon a star...change a thing my love.
So you know the answer as I do. Chris my love, I'll always love you!

Written from a broken heart, to Chris Taylor, Denver, Colorado 1974.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this poem while in Denver Colorado to a young woman I loved,
Nevertheless, due to my PTSD that I acquired during my tour in Vietnam
my emotional life was so turbulent that I was unable to maintain a stable relationship with her. I wrote this poem to her out of a broken heart. I wanted to marry her; however, my emotions, later ended our relationship then I eventually moved back to Georgia, my home. Unfortunately, I only had one connection with her after my departure, that was around 1974. Although, these many years have passed, I find myself remembering our fragile relationship. I've since been married 3 times, all of my wives eventually left me because they couldn't deal with my emotional life. I have been a single man now for 16 years, and I am quite happy living my life this way. I've thought enough of Chris Taylor, that I've had these poems, that I wrote to her, tucked away, these many many years.
