Crocodilopolis (Crocodile-City) Poem by Elia Michael

Crocodilopolis (Crocodile-City)

It is very hard for me to believe
But in Ancient Egypt there was a town
Of crocodiles – I’m not trying to deceive
Yes, there really was I say – please do not frown!

They kept one crocodile in a temple
With sand and food, dressed in jewels and gold
T’was worshipped by the noble and humble
And must have been a wonder to behold

The town was named Crocodilopolis
Because the people revered crocodiles
And when the Greeks first named this strange polis
Some rolled about laughing and some wore smiles
