Crossing Burning Bridges Poem by Teresa Stiffler

Crossing Burning Bridges

She works in a store downtown
That's laid off now three times
The next ones going to shut it down
Along with her life
She don't care about their healthcare plan
Stocks or how she'll retire
She's got dinner for the kids in mind
And how to pay for her lights

And she's crossing burning bridges
Drowning in the pain
Pleading for forgiveness
And strength to fight the rage
She's calling out for heroes
To pull her from the flames
Crossing burning bridges
And holding tight to faith

He hasn't seen her in a week now
Since he started at two jobs
They take half if what he makes
And still that ain't enough
But he's got two kids to think of
How to teach them right from wrong
Fix the roof and mow the grass
In the one day he has off

And he's crossing burning bridges
Drowning in the pain
Pleading for forgiveness
And strength to fight the rage
He's calling out for heroes
To pull him from the flames
Crossing burning bridges
While holding tight to faith

It's not the world we live in
The one on our TV
It's not the hope that we believed in
Or the promise of our dreams
So where's it all to come from
The answer's you and me
With the final cost our freedom
And no one who'll believe

That we're crossing burning bridges
Drowning in the pain
Pleading for forgiveness
And strength to fight the rage
We are calling out for heroes
To pull us from the flames
Crossing burning bridges
Holding tight to faith
