Daddy Long-Legs Poem by Nika McGuin

Daddy Long-Legs

Rating: 2.8

Step-Daddy fouled-up
Blood-Daddy went missing
But Daddy Long-Legs sat waiting
just for me to sit beside him.
When I arrived he just stared,
watched me drown my bitterness
in four bowls of lentil soup.

I walked away and he's probably still waiting.
I'd always have to seek him out,
just like the other Daddies.

The opening two lines are sharp, devastating critiques of two-father figures who FAILED IN THEIR ROLE. This leaves you with the spider who, like the two men, is a father only in name. The understated way you express this truth makes it hit me as a reader more powerfully than any direct, emotional expression. And letting the bowls of cereal carry the weight of your sorrow is equally effective. The mspider alone at the end is inspired.
