Darkness Poem by Lily Ives

Pull the wool over my eyes;
there's nothing left to see here.
Panic, fakery, fear and exhaustion
pollutes the rivers that once
provided sustenance to humankind -
We fill our cups with percolating waters
from toxic rivers reeking of rotten eggs
and in turn, poison the air we breathe
with each word mindlessly hurled from our mouth.
Criticism smeared across digital screens
from avatars pretending to be men
does not liberate
but oppresses them of their humanity.
Sensationalism, superiority, excess and ignorance,
oxidizes the very foundation holding us whole
and turns the mighty scaffolding into brittle rust.
A dark force lurks deep below the cities
and threatens to unleash the monsters
we buried beneath five metres of concrete.
At night, we evade the abyss momentarily
by casting artificial light
before an endless stream of entertainment -
We chase the glow like a moth
mesmerized by a deadly flame.
The walls urge us to pay attention
to the shadows cast in the corners
of the room where light cannot penetrate -
Yet, despite the luminosity,
we are blinded and paralyzed
like deer in the headlights.
We slay dragons in caves to rob it
of gold and call ourselves victorious!
Our obsession with force, toil
and control of chaos strips
the yin and yang circle of black ink.
When we don't seek the wickedness in our hearts,
our blood, like wine, grows turbid.
We remain sick and imprisoned
because we refuse to liberate
the darkness and the beasts living within us.
Did you know that the devil is in the light
and that his name is Lucifer?
So call to Kali and dare to stare
into the void to restore
health and balance in your spirit!
For enlightenment won't be found
before the bustling and beaming sun
but in the still and silent night.
