Delayed Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

Delayed

It was one of those days
Getting ready for work...
Unplanned snags got in the way

I have a meeting… I must go
Oh no, now I’ve got a loose button
Find needle and thread to sew

I can’t believe I have been delayed
Okay, now where are my keys?
Panic is setting in…nerves are frayed

Finally on the road…need to speed
On the expressway making time
Oh no, traffic is stopped…take heed

Take a right, on the shoulder…detour
Arriving late…agenda is in progress
Muted intrusion is tolerantly endured

An unsteady beginning to the day
Did not affect my remaining schedule
All uneasy feelings simply faded away

Later, relaxing with the evening paper
A heading of bold type caught my eye
Suddenly my calm thoughts tapered

That morning a fatal accident occurred
On the travel route I take daily
With a sudden chill my vision blurred

I like the way you take an 'ordinary' day's occurrence and help us stop and really look at it - not in the style of William Carlos Williams whose poems consisted of a sudden glance finishing with a collage to be seen all at once but in a meditative sense always leaving a surprise at the end.
