Today a reminder that one man's pride
Cannot destroy our faith in tomorrow
And four years is not nearly enough time
To destroy a dozen score and five more
'Justice for all' can't be deferred again
A problem for our children to resolve
That our forefathers should have not began
Must, by us, with vigor, forthwith, be solved
We have, for too long, given equity
Empty words, resting upon our laurels
And our treatment of the poor and needy
Lay bare and damn our supposed morals
May God forgive our false veracity of love
And, those we hurt, be granted favor from above
Weight laid upon our collective shoulders
Lifted in an instant by solemn oath
And our collective sighs of great relief
Hope, anew, sprouts and bends into growth
Democracy has prevailed on this day
But, will it stand prevalent tomorrow?
At this time of testing we must triumph
Not to look back in years ahead in woe
So, take a cleansing breath, America
Rest well and be comforted by this peace
For tomorrow, we wake to a new day
And the works we start, then, must never cease
What will be our legacy that we leave behind?
What will our children say when we come to their mind?
