Dignity Retrieved

Silent sounds make music
on abandoned walls
of broken house where
memories linger still and
recreate scenes of yesterday.

Little children grown old
still weep and giggle
shout and pout, and pull
all kinds of faces, in familiar
places, of treasures hidden
in the past.

Now at last the fast is broken,
and table set in dining place
of mind, where loving space
of heart, gathers family,
friends and forgotten hopes

And toothless faces smile
as tears run down their cheeks
to mingle with the dribble of
their mouths on regal chin.

Dignity is not lost but
strengthened as life ebbs its
way to place where it will stay
in quiet stillness and in peace.
