Discretion Poem by Victor Okechukwu Anyaegbuna

Discretion

In life’s dreams so bounteous
We live and fly like pregnant clouds
Waiting to deliver volleys of heavy rains;
Sourcing pleasures that kill pains
To make us carouse and riot in the rain,
Hankering fortunes that no more shall wane;
Oblivious of pangs that kill pleasures
To poach on our mortal treasures.

We take decisions on lofty ideals
That often threaten our regular meals
Frequently unmindful of great dangers
Hidden by our mind’s weird strangers
Lurking in blinded windows
That impersonate shadows
Of our transient unthinking minds
Ere the guardian of our being finds
That we say YES when we should say NO
And suffer the cruciate pains that follow
Like starving lions in search of game
Hungry and dismayed in their fame

We chase when we should scorn
And frequently get hooked on the buffalo’s horn
Or the Hippo’s palatial mouth, that ushers
Jaw strength that drives spiking crushers.
We say NO when we should say YES
And go hungry lamenting our mess,
Failed decision and indiscretion.
