Drowning On Dry Land Poem by Emily Winchester

Drowning On Dry Land

You were by my side
All the time
You were my person
The one who
Kept me from
Falling apart
What happened?
I know

I found out
It was a lie
A lie
I was the third person
Unimportant
Insignificant
To you
Why didn't
I see it before?
I was
So blind
I wouldn't let you take
My responsibility
Away from me

Your messages
On the phone
Ripped my heart out
And made me bitter
Made me the way I am
How could you
Be so cold?

All the rage
Fury
Changed me
Forever
Locked inside
I didn't have a key

I knew it would happen
Sooner or later
But it took me
Like a sneaker wave
Surprised
You let me drown
You let me drown
On dry land
