Eggs & Toast Poem by Kewayne Wadley

Eggs & Toast

Let's go somewhere that's adept
At forgetting.
The taste of breakfast,
Your name as crisp as the edges
Of toast.
Sun-bleached & silent.
The front door closed tight.
Let's go somewhere far,
The awning left untouched.
I woke up & you were the first thing
On my mind.
I grabbed you & held you tight,
Leaving before the sun rose too high.
What else could we have done.
Digging my fork into a plate
Of scrambled eggs,
The shifting of salt then pepper,
The illusion that there's more than
What's really there.
Do you know of a place like this?
I'd really like to go.
It doesn't matter where, long as it's far
& your there with me.
Let's run away as adults & pretend
That we're kids.
Up all night, unable to sleep.
A feeling that constantly feels
Fleeting.
I woke up & you were the first thing
On my mind.
Your name drenched & soaked
In the middle of my mouth.
A crumb or two,
Savored & flaked.
A feeling that constantly feels
Like it's fleeting.
You taste great with jelly.
The way you spread so little of yourself
& make it seem like a lot.
It's some feelings you never
Want to forget,
No matter where you are
Not all toast & eggs taste the same.
No matter how much fun you're
having
