Elusive Angel Poem by Tina Stewart

Elusive Angel

I awake to another dark and dismal day.
Eyes black as ink, glaring demonically,
with a frown as threatening as thunder
Mouth taut and twisted.
Fetid breath polluting the air
with every strangulated, cracked caw.
My shrivelled heart scurries
to bury itself deep out of harm’s way.

As my multitude of medications
seep into my system,
tired eyes pale to grey.
Become fixed, trance like.
My face, expressionless,
appears almost translucent.
My fragile mind,
unable to format a tangible thought,
lies shrouded in quiet confusion.
Dismal day ends.

Drifting in and out of sleep,
through interminable night,
I visit, for the briefest moment,
an incandescent haven.
I spy an angel with vibrant smile,
and engaging eyes of sparkling blue.
Her radiant complexion
exudes innocence, naivete,
peace.
With delicate hands she reaches out,
beckons me.

Almost touching now, face to face,
a hangman’s noose drops between us.
The angel smiles in resignation,
as she slips her head
into the sinister snare.
The rope tightens.
The angel’s eyes glaze,
her smile dissipates.
And I awake to another dark and dismal day.
