Evergreen Addict Poem by Ella Lazaare

Evergreen Addict

Rating: 4.7

Watching the news and choking on their freedom of speech
Went out for a walk and I thought I smelled the beach
I must be crazy! These surroundings are evergreen
Hope I wasn't high while I try to stay forever clean

Mind over matter, one step at a time
Everything is true as long as it's a rhyme
Staring at the bottle that's calling me by my name
Gotta get out, gotta stop being a walking shame

Breathe in, breathe out, evergreen air filling my lungs all organic
If I stop thinking about those pills then just maybe I won't panic
Two steps forward and one step back
Recovery never was a linear track

I need to stop the shakes and I need to stop them fast
Without my substances, I don't think I can last

'I need to stop the shakes and I need to stop them fast Without my substances, I don't think I can last' - most addicts think like that, but they can ultimately come out of the mess by strong willpower and care and empathy by near and dear ones. 'Two steps forward and one step back Recovery never was a linear track' - true, but yet persistent efforts must go on!

Addiction to nature is life but addiction to drugs is hamartia. Thanks

Ella, I like the string autobiographical presence in the poem. If you really want to keep writing formal poetry, you need to learn about meter. A good book to study is Paul Fussell's Poetic Meter and Poetic Form. If you have time, check out my new website: jeffersoncarterverse.com Tell me how you like it, and, if you do, perhaps share it with interested friends? Thanks! Yrs, JC
