Evergreen As This Garden Poem by Obed dela Cruz

Evergreen As This Garden

‘Tis from the genesis of life and breath,
‘Tis from the first wake of the early man,
Nothing is intended to end at death
If we’ll choose to walk on eternal span.

When I first beheld the sun’s distant rays,
‘Twas years ago but I can still recall
When summer was faithful in all its days
And the birds resound as their voices call.

You made angels lift me on the mountains
And I saw You placed some treasures within.
Then You led me to life-giving fountains,
As You shared some of the secrets therein.

The trees whisper of glories day and night
And branches raised up high sway with the air.
You and I walk this garden full of light,
Evergreen when creation has no impair.

But why, what happened when I ate the fruit?
I saw myself walking from the garden.
Is there something wrong in my own pursuit?
Tell me, when will I hear Your voice again?

Where are the fingers that once reached for me?
How come I cannot understand the Sky?
Where did it go, where is spring’s memory?
For all I can see are the dusts left by.

But Father, You have given a promise
Which I think, by rights, I never deserve.
But Father, by Your grace grant my release.
Let Adam’s tendencies part from my nerve.

And O, please carry me back in the life
Away from the curses of my demise.
Resurrect me, I pray, remove this strife
Then let me walk again to see the skies.

Evergreen as this garden, let this soul
Because my real Peace in You I long for.
Until that day, let my life be in whole
I surrender all, even things before.

Reaching for Your fingers, let me touch them
Let no space get between Heaven and Earth.
This is my prayer, this with all I am
That You may grant this spirit its rebirth.

Evergreen as this garden, let it so
Be with me through the days of tomorrow.
