Far North Of This Countryside Poem by Francis Duggan

Far North Of This Countryside

Far north of this countryside by Warrnambool
I lived as a boy and went to primary school
In the Duhallow Town of Millstreet long ago
Long before time itself became my foe
Like every boy of the fifties I have known of a better day
And time that rusts iron keeps on ticking away
In memory we can only go to the past
And remember a youth that was not meant to last
Boyhood for me was a memorable time
Long before I reached my physical prime
Until the yearn for travel from the home fields did take me away
And I live as an ageing migrant today
Far south of the town where I went to primary school
In this coastal countryside by Warrnambool.
