Farewell My Lovely Poem by Dónall Dempsey

Farewell My Lovely

It’s been a whole week now since
we broke up.

We who saw each other every day
every second of every day

Suddenly awkward
at seeing each other

unexpectedly.

We kiss like visiting dignitaries
a kiss on each cheek

Each a King or Queen
of our respective Lonelinessess.

Ghosts of all
our other kisses

fluttering madly
about us.

We don’t kiss
on leaving.

I say: “Well, goodbye then...? ”

You say: “Ciao...ciao! ”
