Farewell Sonnet (Sonnet 25) Poem by Larry Lynn

Farewell Sonnet (Sonnet 25)

Not long the searing embers fed the flame
where two souls flickered first with passion spent
pursuing each their ardent goals the same:
unwav'ring trust, regardless where they went.
Each fled the woes the web of woven Fate
had measured, cut, and pasted - each, a life
alike enough to satisfy a mate:
the husband, he, and she, his faithful wife.
But caustic doubt, dark mantle, smothered dreams
the elder held still loving his sweet beau
whose loves, themselves, filled outward flowing streams
beyond the reach where aged limbs can't go.
Cold ashes lie where once beat strong our hearts
‘til now from one the breath of love departs.
