Fate
by Rosa M. Hynes,1935

What is this fate that rules our lives
And steers its course through uncut roads;
That ties our hands and helpless we
Must carry on with heavy loads?

What is this thing that takes our hearts
And wounds us till we cry aloud;
That fills our souls with vain desires,
And makes us lonely in a crowd?

What thing gives love, while we with tears
And humble sacrifice must pay
The precious price for happiness;
yet, like a dream is snatched away?

It urges us to build our hopes
Toward joy, then gives us grief and hate;
Wrecks our lives and breaks our hearts,
Though dead, we live; 'pon death to wait?
