Fateful Love Poem by Edwina Reizer

Fateful Love

It's not as easy to fall out of love
as it is to fall in.
It comes on easily with a passion,
quickly does it begin.
It takes right over and consumes you
and does not let you rest.
It becomes your minute-by-minute thought.
It's nothing like you would have guessed.

Now when it happens late in life
you count your empty years.
You can't imagine how you went so long
with so many dried up tears.
But fate has a way of catching you
and turning you upside down.
And there's not a thing you can do about it
except stand your ground.

Can you deny it's happened and close your heart
and watch it drift away?
I think that's the hardest thing to do,
like a scene from a nightmare play.
No, I think you grasp it and hold it
and treat it tenderly.
And praise God for gifting it to you
and treasure it silently.
