Father Poem by UMAKANTA ROUT (AROOP)

Father

Rating: 5.0

We feel your absence distinctly
During the Consolidation of Lands
At the time of legal notice
And at the payment of rent and fees.

We remember you
When the nominal leader
Try to put a marking post
At the backyard land of ours.

You are needed at the time of
Marriage, functions and other celebrations,
For us, not for you,
As the pyre holds fire
Not for you, but for your next generation.

You remain on the front room wall
You be there for ever
Looking and blessing us all
But you do not live there of your own,
We keep you at the entrance
To keep watch on our residence,
We get sound sleep
Which you do not require,

You are accused and often abused
On distribution of paddy
And on partition of assets,
Again on claiming over your deposits
Or at any disputes arise.

Your assets give us way
To proceed to a decision
And we install a statue of yours
Spending your left portions.

We suffer from strain and stress,
Devoid of calmness
We become violent,
But Alas!
You remain on that standing wall
Unmoved, calm and quiet
Looking over the front door
And towards the Main gate.

Because you are not like us
You are a Father …A Father alone….!
