First True Love Poem by Jeremy Nel

First True Love

Rating: 5.0

How oft I wish, how oft I wonder,
What is it that you think, that you desire?
You remain to me so Egyptian where you are yonder
So enigmatic and frustrating. For I am in a mire
Of lost hopeless love.

How oft I rethink, the first time I saw you in amazement,
Your eyes locked on mine with such gentle gaze
Mine staring at yours in wonderment.
For you were the woman of my dreams. I was in a daze,
I could only stare at this apparition from my nocturnal visitation.

How cruel is oft our destiny when the boats of fate
Often pass in the night
With the occupants not knowing the state
Of the play they have just lost, the blight
Of empty yearning visited upon them.

Yet here the joy was bestowed upon me
When our boats collided
In the dusk as we drifted upon the sea
Of our emotions. I was to find you, my search completed
With my life’s yearning at an end.

So oft one hears of love at first sight
How was it then that me it smite?
This unbeliever? Just to make me contrite
And make me believe in love’s might?
I knew not then, I still know not tonight.

So much then my rapturous enjoyment
As of a child at a birthday party garnering in delight
The unexpected joy from each and every present
And the whoops of joy come as they might
From every new toy, each new sight.

So it was for me my dear,
When first I laid my eyes on you.
Your chestnut hair, your hazel eyes so clear
I was amazed. I was torn in two
At loving you and yet not having you.

So great my joy
Such great happiness
Flooded through my soul when you said, oh so coy
That yes, you would partner me in life
And be with me forever more.

Oh my dear how much I wish I had the power,
To open your Egyptian tomb of silence
And hear the whisper
And understand your desire
So that I may love you better.
