For Brevity's Sake

Northumberland, you'd think,
would be reduced to Nor-thum;
but driving from Berwick
to Hadrian's Wall
is driving through North-um.

You'd think Northamptonshire
would be said Nor-thants;
but travelling from London
to Rockingham Forest
is heading up to Nor-North-ants.
