For Queen And Country Poem by Raymond Leslie Kingsbury

For Queen And Country

Would you give your life for them, is the question that i ask? .
Shed tears of grief as you gently lay, white lilies on their cask.
Could you tell a little girl, or boy of maybe three? .
The smiling face in photographs, again they'll never see.
Could you justify to them, the reason for their death? .
Describe the sun baked desert, where they drew their final breath.
Could you tell their parents why, they lived to see them die? .
In some far flung corner of the world, beneath a foreign sky.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this as a protest to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Openly questioning the MPs of the day, on what i still believe was an illegal act.
