Friends Poem by Martin Byrne

Friends

Dark cold room
Feeling of gloom
Bump against my wall
Think there’s meaning to it all
My eyes they start to bawl
My limbs start to crawl
A window that I shatter
Suddenly something is the matter
My heart that was dust
You blew on, you must (and girl, it done scatter)
My soul tossed down stairs
It roll ‘til it tears

Oh, and that window I shattered
Bleeding my blood now is the matter
Cell in my hand, three numbers on the phone
Resigned to the alpha of my omega I dropp down my
EYE, EX, EYE, EYE (Roman Numerals, Give it a try)
Why bleeding bleeding crystals and fuzzy haze
Dripping into my retina, such a fun way
To have someone find me
(drip drop, blood in my eye!)

Then friend find me bleeding, friend hit send.
He send for help for the dirty whelp who sees red.
Resting in the medicinal bed, you hold me as I am led.
To a safer place where the bears can’t get me
With armor strong enough to resist even MY attempts.
And friend before they cart me off
Thanks we’ll exchange
Perhaps just in my look
A smile for a long second (then a scowl for a longer second)
You gave to me your time, your trouble,
Your aching heart beckoning me away from
Oblivion's edges.
(I saw you crying over yonder, an uncovered heart works wonders)

So give me my yes, my agreeable terms
My sentence to a psych ward, Boy shall I be bored bored bored.
Three years later, you’ll find me greater
Walking into the world with a patch on my heart,
A cigarette in my hand, and the belief that I would not,
Could not, should not, shall not, will not, try a, slip knot.
Greetings given at the exit of crazy town (I can still hear it all before the doors closes)
A hug, another hug, a car, a home, a dinner, a family pet, (no sweat!)
We bow our heads in reverent dressing, and ask the big man for a blessing
And the first words I say? “Thank you friend for another day”
