From The Old Fields I Loved Poem by Francis Duggan

From The Old Fields I Loved

From the old fields i loved I've been too long away
And i would feel a stranger in Millstreet today
The changes are happening there i have been told
And far south of Claraghatlea i am growing old
Those now in their twenties would not know me there
And all of those i knew there would have gray in their hair
Whilst many like me would be ageing elsewhere
With the passing of time we look the worst for wear,
Back there in Duhallow 'tis now near prime of Spring
And in groves and on hedgerows the nesting birds sing
It is such a beautiful time of the year
By old Clara mountain so far north of here
And since i left the old fields two decades ago
In the places i once loved now few of me would know.
