Whenever we were young
Pa told us not to play with guns,
If we did we would get beat,
Out in the summer, in the scorching heat
General Grant couldn't believe me.
He didn't think I was from Tennessee.
For the Union I was fighting,
He thought a Tennessee man would be hiding.
