Generation Gap

'Was that what you meant? '
Odd how the question recurs
the older I grow-
'Was that what you meant? '
As though my answer might blow
holes through what they think
I think I might know.
Have my words become too simple?
Am I too hesitant, too bold?
Or simply too old to recall
the stories behind words
that first I was told?
