Giovanni From Rome Poem by Francis Duggan

Giovanni From Rome

He's a bit homesick and he's far away from home
From here it is a long way north to Rome
But with an Aussie wife and a two year old daughter and another on the way
He is in Victoria for what's known as the long stay.

Though he has the accent of his native Land
His English is not hard to understand
Last week Giovanni celebrated his birthday twenty three
A long way south of Rome in Italy.

A loyal supporter of the Italian Football Team
A back to back World Cup of such for them he does dream
Of Italy he remains a loyal fan
The love of Homeland in the migrant man.

Though at times homesick he is contented in his life
Devoted to his young daughter and his lovely Aussie wife
A likeable young man quite close to his life's prime
Homesickness it will fade from him in time.
