Girl Holding A Cigarette Poem by Lotte Ahmad

Girl Holding A Cigarette

I saw the devil in her eyes.
It haunted me because she covered it up with defiance;
Like she was saying to me,
'I suffer, but I need no help to end my suffering.'

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
On the 9th of August 2015, I took a late afternoon walk from The Vieux Lyon down to the river Rhône where I sat, wrote poetry and wondered about life and God. From there, I crossed the bridge into Bellecour, walked through Rue Victor-Hugo as I admired the 19th century buildings at Place Ampère and then I amused myself with trying to find a short-cut to get to Perrache without passing Place Carnot or Cours de Verdun. In doing so, I entered a small street, perhaps you could even call it an avenue. That was where I saw her, and what I saw in her eyes, God help me that I never forget.
