Giving Up Smoking Poem by Wendy Cope

Giving Up Smoking

Rating: 4.4

There's not a Shakespeare sonnet
Or a Beethoven quartet
That's easier to like than you
Or harder to forget.

You think that sounds extravagant?
I haven't finished yet —
I like you more than I would like
To have a cigarette.

I once knew a guy who claimed he was not addicted to smoking. He could give it up any time he wanted. 'I've done it several times, ' he said. (In fact, it is the same guy I called 'Eddie' in my poem Eddie and the Dragon.)

She is a robust voice- -and she knows the relentless yearning to have another cigarette
