Goodbye Human Poem by martin garner

Goodbye Human

That final lick of my owners face,
before I go to sleep
The salty taste of his flowing tears,
hydrate me while he weeps

My body finally failing,
his heart is breaking too
We lay together, one final time,
he whispers "I love you"

The life we've shared together,
my loving person friend
So caring, and supportive,
now my life comes to an end

Our bond since I was tiny,
all legs and full of beans
So old now and ready to go,
such fun, years in-between

I got you buddy, he says again,
and we go to see the vet
Surrounded by such sadness,
but not ready to go just yet

That final hug and back rub,
I look straight in his eyes
The waterfall that drowns his face,
when I make my final sighs

Good night wee man, I got you,
I hear him splutter out
Then rainbow bridge awaits me,
I can hear a distant shout

What a life and what a time,
even through that final ride
Rest in peace he whispers,
I will never leave his side
