Growing Up Poem by Heather Ladd

Growing Up

Here's a poem I wrote today:

Fussing and fighting
Destroying everything in sight
All your life
But that's all on you

Choices made this second
Affect the next minute, hour, day, month, year
Shadows lurking behind and underneath
Dusting off these old skeletons while spring cleaning your closet

Masquerading around in your party dress
It's not Halloween
So please pull off that perfect facade
That doesn't suit any part of you anymore

Stumbling up this pyramid
Digging your way out of the quick sand you're drowning in
Reaching for those stars
The man on the moon will grab and show you the way home

Baby girl
Don't you know
Can't you see
It all lies deep within you

Your core
Your gut
That heart of gold
And slippery mind

Life is a journey
Neverending story
Game of chess
Rolling dice to decipher going around the gate in the middle of the woods

Rollercoasters are fierce
Riding high
Chilling low
Can only go through it all

No up
No down
Trying to twist and boogie around
Stealing the cheese from the trap

Britches pulled up
Boots laced
Armed with your gear
Go on and walk on through
