Hainan Gibbons Poem by Ima Ryma

Hainan Gibbons

Hainan Island off China's coast,
We few Hainan gibbons remain.
Just twenty some, thirty at most,
Rarest primate in Earth's domain.
Once thousands of us did live here.
Humans turned home forests to waste.
Humans became a force to fear.
Humans poached and turned us to paste.
But now new humans just study,
Perhaps trying to right the wrong.
Of course suspicious we do be.
Humans find us from our song.

Our song recorded on track,
Humans play, hoping we sing back.
