Haiti Poem by Rosie Bourget

Haiti

Rating: 5.0

HAITI

The mountain land
That resists powerful winds
The pearl of the Caribbean!

HAITI

The public fountain
That needs a helping hand
To maintain its land!

HAITI

The neglected land
That needs blood in its veins
To beautify its mountains!

HAITI

Alleviate its pain
So it can fly with its own wings
And do its own things!

HAITI

A beautiful woman
In need of a gentleman
To understand her pain!

HAITI

My mother land
In spite of the pain
You still stand with an empty hand!

HAITI

When I look at you my friend
Blood stops flowing in my brain!
And I have back pain!

HAITI

I wish I had money to spend
To help you maintain
Your highest mountains!

HAITI

What a pain!
Will you ever stand
To take control of your land?

HAITI

Oh! What a beautiful land!
With so many green mountains
That in 1804 took its freedom in vain!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Today, January 1st,2016 is Haiti's 212th year of independence. January 1,1804, Haiti made history by being the first black republic in the world and the first country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery. The first two days of the calendar year is dedicated to commemorate the Independence Day and celebrate Ancestors' Day. Remembering the Founders of Haiti and the individuals who sacrificed their lives during the fight for independence. The universal need to be free by breaking out of their chains and claiming their human rights.

Serving and eating Soup Joumou (squash soup) on Haiti's Independence Day is an integral part of the celebration. During the colonization period in Haiti, only the French masters could eat this soup for good fortune, forbidding the slaves from eating it. On January 1,1804, to celebrate freedom and express victory, Emperor Jean Jacques Dessalines asked his wife, Marie Claire Heureuse Felicite Bonheur Dessalines, to cook and offer the soup to the former slaves as a message to the defeated masters.

Happy Independence Day to 'HAITI', my homeland

All other stanzas of this write consist of very powerful and incisive lines. Incisive lines that could be gleaned as an eye opener to every citizen of Haiti. Cutting and piercing lines right to the core of everyone especially the leaders of the country.

Haiti will remain beautiful forever, however, our people's attitudes need to be improved considerably. Too many Haitian officials are backstabbing, pillaging, and over-exploiting this divine tropical oasis. Let's pray for Haiti on a daily basis.
