Haunted Poem by Elizabeth Cottrell

Haunted

specters in my mind
invade the darkness
cavorting with selfish glee
they steal sleep from me
i can't make them stop
they refuse to leave
on and on they mock me
with impunity
darkness is no sanctuary
there is no refuge in the bottle
even wakefulness cannot stop it
because they dance in derision
whirling
careening
smiling
laughing
spinning
colors blending together
or in black and white
....
