He hit her in the eye, but out of love,
he said. He dreamed
a snake slid up between them on the sheet
an apple in its jaws.
He tried hard not to die and gave a shove
she felt. She screamed:
A bear is charging through the field
a rock between it’s paws.
Then thrashing between sheets
they saved each other
fueled by terror, mutual lust;
she punched him in the groin
and he her eye,
then both woke smashing fists and feet
against the night.
This is how two lovers have to smite
the demon when they need to greet
the serpent lurking like a spy
and hiding in their loins;
strange how lovers find their trust
by grappling with each other
until their lust’s replete.
