He whispered yesterday.
How sweet a song it seems to me,
And sweetest sung his way.

“You are my One Beloved, ”
He speaks again, but O!
Because to other ears addressed,
The words torment me so!

He swore by all the waters
Awhirling in this river
To cherish me within his heart
Forever-forever.

But these are alien waters
That meet the eye today-
The river sands are shifted,
The ripples wooed away.

Ah, must you weep, my heart,
Recalling well his vow?
The water that he swore by
Are nowhere now….
