He Told Me He Was Coming Poem by Maya Reid

He Told Me He Was Coming

I was so excited
For the first time, someone would be there
For the sole purpose
Of seeing me
He told me he was coming
And I fantasized about flowers, hugs, and applause
He told me he would be here
And, though I didn’t show it,
It meant the world to me
And all week I’d been shining
Smiling on the inside
Cuz I knew that someone cared enough
He was coming to see me
But now I’m here
Looking all around
Expecting to see his face in the crowd
Willing myself to find his face in the crowd
But some part of me knows
Probably knew all along
That his face wasn’t there to be found
He told me he was coming
Promised that he was going to be here
Probably didn’t know it was gonna be the first time
Anyone had bothered to come
The first time anyone cared at all
I never should have believed
That he was gonna be any different
He didn’t even have anything to do
He just didn’t remember
He told me he was coming
But here I am with no sign of him
He’s not here
And it’s not just that he let me down
He told me he was coming
And all he did was forget me.
