He Was Interested Poem by Perry Shepard

He Was Interested

She was only fourteen
When he took advantage
She loved the words
And tentative touch.
Mother was combative
And father was absent.
She had forgotten what
It felt like to be held.
He had such a kind smile
And she felt safe for a while.
Yes, he was interested
And she freely talked, pouring
Out the angst of her age.
He listened, really listened
But may have heard
Of the loneliness she lived with.
Mother didn't understand
Father was absent.
With him she felt attractive
He validated her dreams
With promises that seemed real.
Oh! He was hot.
All her friends were jealous,
For he seemed to care,
At least for a little while.
His touch tickled at first
And she shyly laughed.
Slowly he became bold
She didn't know what it meant.
When she first felt afraid
He would retreat and cajole.
She tried to tell him her feelings
The light in his eyes had changed.
His touch became rougher
And he threw her down.
She didn't understand and cried-
As he took her safety away.
Her clothes were torn-
She was lost in numbing terror.
It wasn't supposed
To be like this, it wasn't.
