Hell On Earth Poem by Zoran Bogdanovic

Hell On Earth

Boom!
There go 73 of them.
Boom!
There go 30 more.
And boom! And more.
And boom! And more.
And more,
and more…
As if there is no end to it.
Is there an end to it?
Should there be an end to it,
and why should I care?
After all, they are doing it
to themselves,
We are not killing them.
All we did was remove
that awful beast
if you insist.
Hey, he oppressed them,
he kept them at bay,
dug in the sand
for decades on end;
he even killed some one hundred
people at one time,
That was a terrible crime.
And now he's gone…
Boom! 42 more.
Boom! 12 again.
Where did I stop,
what was I trying to say?
Yeah, he did not let them see
the light of day,
didn't let them be free
in democracy.
And now when he's gone
the life goes on…
Boom! 34.
Well, these are gone,
but it does go on
for those who survive…
Boom! 45.
I mean, we set them free…
Boom! 63.
Now they can flourish,
they can boom,
I mean bloom…
Boom!
Not boom, bloom!
Boom!
And boom!
And boom!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The poem is dedicated to countless innocent victims of the Iraq war and its aftermath. It was written in 2010 and, regrettably, the carnage still goes on unabated.
