Highway 305 Poem by Vera Sidhwa

Highway 305

Highway 305

The electronic sign said,
'Buzzed driving is drunk driving.'
Yet my friend had a beer
Before getting into his car.

The electronic sign said,
'Click it or ticket.'
But the driver getting into his car,
Never clicked on his seat belt.

Our four lane traffic at sixty miles per hour,
Didn't have respectful drivers.
With cell phones in their one hand,
And the steering in their right.

I don't drink anyway,
And put my seatbelt on.
Far ahead I heard
A loud crash.

Yesterday's commercial showed,
A mother looking back at her daughter,
And calling her pretty.
This commercial ended abruptly with the sound of a loud crash.

Then with the picture of a white screen.
