Homecoming Parade Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

Homecoming Parade

The leaves are tumbling from the trees in a colorful array...
It is the season for football and homecoming parades
A time for old traditions to come alive and delight the crowd
Enthusiasm begins to bubble…giving a reason to be proud

Young and old line the streets waiting… creating a gala mood
Anticipating an event of marching feet…what will it include?
In the distance there is the sound of reeds and trumpeting brass
A tremble is felt from a drum cadence…it is time to begin at last

High stepping majorettes twirl and spin…leading the display
Followed by identically uniformed musicians…on their way
Marching with rehearsed intent…eyes focus straight ahead
Each step and breath unifies the movement while being lead

Here come the floats decorated with brightly painted signs
Stating an affiliation with contributing sponsors of many kinds
Waves and smiles are bestowed on huddling family and friends
Cameras are clicking…capturing the moment … filling the lens

Bridled horses respond to reins as hooves go clippody clop
The well groomed steeds steadily proceed…they do not gallop
Excitement is heard as children gather candy tossed by clowns
The parade ends; people disperse and the fire engine sounds

Later on the school's revered football team will meet their rivals
Fans appear including alumni to root for the home team's survival
Midway, floats are judged and a King and Queen are crowned
The game resumes; we're behind… our team is gaining ground!
