Homecoming - The Wounded Soldier Poem by Robert Eckstein

Homecoming - The Wounded Soldier

She took the wounded soldier in her arms
And said, 'You're safe now.
'I know that you've been badly hurt,
'And what you've done to others
'I don't even want to know.
'Dear soldier, now you are free to cry'.

He said, 'I'm lost. I don't know who I am.
'I'm horrified at what I was and did
'And afraid of what I am or might become.
'And I don't even have a home'.

She said, 'That isn't true at all,
'Your home is here'. And held him to her heart.
She said, 'I know your past was dark,
'But even then, there were bright sparks of light.
'Your battles were not all in vain.
'Find peace with me tonight'.
