Hopefulness Poem by Frank Avon

Hopefulness

I will build it
of strings and rubber bands
and kindling,
adding a few leftover Legos
for lace and Justice
and tinker toys
and lincoln logs
for good measure.

They will call me Candid
misspelled in ALL capitols
and mispronounce my name

Aaron
Erring
Earing

You would look slinky in black,
they'll shout from the sidelines
as I twist the final discus
and kneel in the dust
'Brute! ' they'll scream,
'Sinner! '

I will call its attic
a plunder room
and hide there
all his letters
in a chocolate-covered cherry box,
but he will have already died
in the War
and she will have already left

His will be her first death
of many deaths the first

'I will wear floodlights, '
I sing, 'at midnight, '
and 'Summer' and 'Colours'
and 'To All Appearances'

from the Hart,
from the Hart

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This should be printed without periods and without the writer's name. The signature is encoded in lines 9-14. Lines 12-14 should be indented several spaces.

The lines about the love letters in the chocolate-covered cherry box refer to my sister's first love, who died in World War II. She has since lost a sister, brother, ex-husband, three of her five children, and a grandchild. She is now 95 years old, frail but sprightly, and cheerful.

This poem is a tribute to Electroclash, esp. Calvin Harris, obviously, and some of the music of the '80s, which was of no interest to me until it was resusitated electronically. It lives on in spite of its early demise.
