Hunting Rabbit Poem by Michael Pruchnicki

Hunting Rabbit

I still remember the rabbit I slaughtered
on a hunting trip to northern Wisconsin
my first autumn home
from overseas.

Caught up in the fervor to kill a deer
I went along with some buddies
I'd served with overseas
in the Army.

It was near the end of a long cold day
in the woods without seeing a deer
when I happened on a wild hare
which fled at first sight.

Blood lust kicked in and I fired
when the creature came round
again in rabbity fear!
Fur and blood flew!

I identified with that pile
of white and brownish hair
recalling the swollen corpses
of friend and foe in fields overseas!
