I Cannot Have A Voice Other Than My Own Poem by Shalom Freedman

I Cannot Have A Voice Other Than My Own

I cannot have a voice other than my own-
Even if my own voice tires and ceases to please me
I can pretend and invent
I can mock and make use of the voices of others
But in my soul I am only a single voice.

The Buddhists and Hume say we have no single self
But I know wherever I go
I cannot escape the ‘I’ of my own reality.
