I Didn't Know Poem by Valerie Dohren

I Didn't Know

Rating: 5.0

I didn't know the dark would come
to steal away the light -
I didn't know the dark would come
to change my day to night.

I didn't know the dark would come
and turn my joy to tears -
I didn't know the dark would come
and end our coloured years.

If I had known the dark would come
upon that fateful day -
I would have sparked a candle flame
to chase it all away.

I would have loved you even more
and given you my breath -
That you could live instead of me
when you were close to death.

I didn't know the light would die
when you were gone from me -
I didn't know the light would die
how lonely I would be.

I didn't know the light would die
and bring the dark to stay -
I didn't know the light would die
when you were gone away.

If I had known the light would die
and bring me so much pain -
I would have lit a candle flame
to see you once again.

I would have lit a candle flame
to see you once again.

There is so much in this poem. The regret of not spending enough time with a loved one before they're gone weighs on all our minds. Hindsight.

Your words are heard and felt. Though I believe we are not given a life to just wait to die. Writing does heal so much pain. May your words be filling that void. The wonderful companion who was your soulmate. You are a poet who is one of the best on PH.
