I, Narcissus Poem by TMA

I, Narcissus

She said,
“Your eyes are two shining jewels
Cut from the clearest stone
And I wouldn’t accept
All the diamonds in the world
If I could but gaze into them forever.”
I smiled a little
Then turned away
Said, “I have to go now
That’s enough for today.”

She said,
“Your heart is a chest of treasures
Of value beyond measure
And I would give my soul
To have it as my own
Will you give it to me? ”
I winked at her
Then turned to say
“I have to go now,
That’s enough for today.”

She said,
“Your face is the face of Beauty
And my heart leaps when I see it
My soul melts when you look at me
And I die when you smile
But resurrect when I think of you.”
My heart swelled with pride
And I looked away –
“I have to go now,
That’s enough for today.”

She said,
“I love you, Narcissus
And my heart is yours
My soul and my spirit
And all that I am
Will you accept this gift? ”
She was earnest and passionate –
“Now say what you may! ”
Said I, “I must go now,
That’s enough for today.”

I left her staring at me
My retreating, perfect self
Made my way to the river
Where my lover awaits
Took my seat at the side
Of the clear river-pool
And stared at my reflection
And it was beautiful…
