I never thought the day would come
When we would no longer be young
Like we were when we met in Brum
What was that song Streisand had sung?
'The Way We Were' is what she sang
We saw that film so long ago
Now our voices have an old twang
And we are so painfully slow
'Misty Water-colored Mem'ries'
Is what Barbra sang wistfully
Like her I cling to reveries
To the past nostalgically
Days in the flat in Pershore Road
You each morning to your uni
And I too would leave our abode
Off to work in telegraphy
We spent long nights in The Jester
Longer still in The Nightingale
We were gay and full of laughter
Or is that just a fairytale?
Like Barbra's song I too do know
We look at things through time's distance
And they take on a rosy glow
A new meaning and existence
The day is here and we are old
And although we live far apart
You are a friend if truth be told
My thanks to you straight from the heart
