I Want To Live On Poem by Francis Duggan

I Want To Live On

For my years of living I've little to show
So little of Life or of Nature I know
But the lust is in me for to keep living on
For few will remember me when I am gone

For to rest forever in the dead person's plot
In a short space of time 'twill be completely forgot
That I ever lived in this World at all
Quite ordinary people few wish to recall.

But at least for me 'twill be over the struggle of life
The everyday self doubt and the constant inner strife
That is part of living for people like me
So much for the self destructive power of self thought poverty

Or negative thinking or call it what you may
Since the positive thinkers always lead the way
To a far better future or so we are told
Yet so many still dying of hunger and cold.

Time has left me weary I always feel tired
And by the will to live I am only inspired
I want to live on for as long as I can
And to die in my bed as a boring old man.
